How To Choose The Right Paint Color For Your Fence

Never underestimate how important the right color is for your boundary fence. The choice of color can either enhance the look of your garden or the overall look and feel of your property, or it can make the place appear dingy and far smaller than it is.

In any event, your boundary fence is like the receptionist of your business – it’s the first line of defense and visitors will be left with either a great first impression or they will be unimpressed with your property at first glance. In short, your boundary fencing should be setting the scene.

Your boundary fence should also be an extension of your house, and it can be made out of various materials like wood, metal, brick, and mortar, or even bamboo. They also come in different heights and widths, depending on the style of your home. The height may even be dictated by rules set by your municipality’s by-laws or heritage considerations.

Decorators have started thinking about the exterior of homes as an extra room. So think of your garden area, patio, or pool section as the fourth room of your three-bedroom house. Whatever color you paint the boundary fencing surrounding these areas needs to create the right mood or ambiance and needs to invite residents and guests alike into these newly created exterior spaces.

Don’t choose your color on a whim but also bear in mind that selecting a color doesn’t have to be stressful and you would do well to remember that paint isn’t permanent (although it will cost you a bit if you change the color).

Here are a few things to think about when you’re choosing a color for your boundary fencing:

Go against convention

Go against convention
Go against convention

Exteriors surfaces are very different from interior walls when it comes to the choice of paint color. For one, lighter shades make feature gardens appear small because they don’t add to the depth of the space of your outside areas.

By using dark colors, you go against conventional wisdom because you would choose a lighter interior surface to make rooms and indoor areas appear larger. Indoor walls are usually painted lighter colors too because they also assist in enhancing natural light flowing into your home.

But with outside surfaces and especially boundary fences you want to turn that conventional wisdom on its head. What you want is for your greenery – the foliage and flowers in their brilliant colors – to stand out. This is best achieved by painting your boundary fence a darker color or even black to create a look that makes your garden and overall property appear larger and showcases your garden because it creates depth.

Complement, don’t outshine

Complement, don’t outshine
Complement, don’t outshine

Remember, the focus should be on your garden or landscaped area and not on the boundary fence. So avoid painting the boundary fence a bright color that will make it the center of attraction. Stay away from bright orange, yellow or red because these colors will compete with what you’re actually trying to show off: your garden.

Instead, opt for earthy tones. Black is always best because it brings out the vivid colors of plants and flowers and is easier to maintain. Dark or navy blue is also a favorite, especially on cast iron fences in London. Stony grey is another popular option to show off landscaped gardens and foliage displays.

If you’re worried that a black fence may be too much on the eye, then consider a trellis against it and plant some climbing plants to soften the look – although this will be most practical on the inside of the boundary fence.

Don’t camouflage

Always be careful with dark brown or dark green because you may be creating a camouflage effect where your impressive gardening skills will be lost to admirers.

Don’t be afraid to go very dark with the color you choose for your boundary wall. When using colors outside, they also appear lighter in direct sunlight, and the undertone of whichever color you choose may look far dominant than what you had in mind.

Bear in mind too that whatever color you paint your boundary fence, it will have to complement the exterior walls of your home. While you’re looking to find a good match for your exterior walls also consider what color the window frames, shutters or doors and frames are painted. You don’t want your boundary fence color clashing with or camouflaging these essential elements of your house.

Do the prep work

When choosing a color, don’t forget to consider the surface. Black usually works best with solid fences rather than on a picket fence for instance. With wrought iron, palisade, or picket-style fencing a dark or navy blue often works best, and again, this is quite a trend with townhouses in London.

Also, remember that your boundary fencing will need to be prepared before painting. Treat bare wood with a blocking primer, then prime before painting with an exterior eggshell to make it weather resistant. If the fence has been painted before it will need to be sanded to remove loose or flaking paint.

The time to go bright

That there is a role for brighter dark browns or dark greens – or even more vivid colors depending on what your boundary fence is surrounding. Dark brown or dark green should be considered if your boundary fence is covering a backyard area with a pool and patio, decking or pebbles, paving or concrete floors, and has pot plants as decorative features rather than a landscaped garden.

You may even want to experiment with brighter colors on a boundary fence that accentuates outside furniture and pool-side walls. The bright, playful colors can create a fun vibe that is usually associated with pools and outdoor activity. Think about how a hot pink boundary fence will look around furniture in a contrasting color, complemented with a few potted plants to transform your pool area into a tropical oasis. The more creative DIY-practitioners may even want to consider playing around with two shades of the same color and painting a pattern on a pool-side boundary fence to create a particular mood.

Don’t reinvent the wheel

Nothing is ever an original idea so don’t be coy to drive around the neighborhood to have a look at what others have done to the color of their boundary fencing. At the risk of coming off as a peeping Tom, take pictures if you need to. Make a list of what’s hot and what is not. The point is that you’ll be able to see what worked and what didn’t, depending on your own unique needs and circumstances.

If you’re friendly with a neighbor, who had recently painted their boundary fencing then invite them round for tea and hear what they thought when they decided on the choice of color.

If this approach doesn’t work, you can always go online to see what others have done to make their boundary fences enhance their homes. The advantage of the worldwide web is that you don’t have to keep your search for inspiration local and can adapt any style or look for your home.

Also, consider what type of finish or application you will be using on your boundary fence surface. Depending on the need, you would need to think about whether you’re going with a shiny, high sheen finish or a matt finish. Once you’ve chosen a color, you need to think about how you will apply the paint too: brush or spray.

For boundary fencing that is black or dark around a lush garden, you’re probably better off painting a matt finish with a brush or roller. If you’re painting color on a boundary fence as part of a feature to create an ambiance around a pool where there is minimal foliage, you want to consider using paint that produces a rich, shiny finish. Also, think about how much time you’re prepared to invest in painting the boundary fence. You can do it by hand quite successfully, but this will take a lot of time. Alternatively, you could rent or buy a professional spraying system to get the job done faster.

Get a few test colors from your nearest paint shop and test them on your fence. When testing a shade, be sure to have some of your plants or flowers in the background to see what it will look like.

For best results, undertake outdoor painting projects when the weather’s dry. Don’t ever paint damp wood since this will cause the paint to blister and flake off.  It is not advised to paint in direct sunlight or when temperatures exceed 30°c.

If you’re not positive you can do it yourself, you can always use the service of an online quote comparison site to get access to a network of paint professionals who can do it for you.

5 Convenient Wearables for Your Heavy DIY Projects

Do-it-yourself home projects are the new thing nowadays. The beauty of DIY is that you can go as small or as big as you want. You can build a small cabinet for your bathroom or choose to remodel the whole room altogether. Of course, this depends on your budget and how much time you have on hand.

If you’ve already set your goals, the next thing to do is gather all the necessary materials. Depending on the size of the endeavor, it might even be a two-person job, so don’t be afraid to include a friend or significant other in your plan. Once all that is taken care of, you need to choose your equipment.

What to Wear for DIY Projects

Choosing the right outerwear and gear for your home DIY projects is essential if you want to work efficiently and not ruin your new clothes in the process. Furthermore, the right item can protect you from possible risks that are involved in heavier tasks such as woodworking or lifting. Here are five convenient wearables and the renovations to match them to.

Old Boots for a Full Basement Remodel

Pulling off a full bathroom remodel is one of the most complex tasks you could possibly assign to yourself. But it is also a very rewarding experience because you will be taking a hugely ignored space with untapped potential and turning it into a functional room. There are many options for it too.

The newest trend is to build a basement bathroom, but if that’s out of your reach, you can repurpose it into a recreation area or even a game room. Bring in some cool light fixtures and a pool table, and you’ve got yourself an amazing room for hanging out with friends or even throwing parties.

However, to do any of these, you will need to fix any underlying issues that your basement might have. For example, a lot of homeowners have reported the presence of an unpleasant sewer gas smell in that specific area of their house. This is usually caused by a clogged drain or faulty piping, so you need to fix it before you attempt to do anything else. If you want to find out more about how to do this, you can find additional info here.

And because things can get messy in this area of the house, a pair of old boots is perfect to have. The best kind would be waterproof fall and winter ones, but you can easily make do with whatever else you have on hand. Rainboots work as well, so don’t worry about having to spend anything extra on special wearables.

Cap or Sunhat for Garden Projects

Do-it-yourself projects for the garden come in all shapes and sizes. A simple way to refresh this part of your property is to decorate it with LED lights or make solar lamps out of jars and bottles. Planting a small flower garden is also a good idea if you don’t already have one. Trees are also a lovely addition if you have the space for it and choose ones that enhance the space they occupy.

Nevertheless, you can also go the hard way and build your own gazebo from scratch. But whatever project you choose, attempt it when the weather is pleasant and sunny, especially if you’re going to do a lot of work outdoors. Low temperatures increase the risk of catching a nasty cold or even the flu, so make sure to protect yourself.

Still, warm weather isn’t without its risks. To stay protected out there in the sun, you must wear a cap or a sunhat and use sunscreen as well. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, no one’s going to judge your fashion sense in your own home. Just make sure to have one on at all times. As for the sunscreen, go SPF 30 or more just to be safe.

Sweatpants and Tank Top for an Extensive Paintjob

Boao 4 Pieces Basic Crop Tank Tops Sleeveless Racerback Crop Sport Top for Women (Black, White, Army Green, Coffee, Medium)

Repainting the outside of your house together with the boundary fence is one of the most extensive projects you can ever take up. You need to choose the right color and get your materials ready.

Remember to reserve at least a few days for this entire endeavor, because there will be a lot of painting that needs to get done. Don’t do it in a hurry, because it will show in each brushstroke.

Naturally, you wouldn’t want to ruin any clothes you might still want to wear in the process. Therefore, you need to find your oldest and most worn-out pair of sweatpants and pair them with a tank top. Not only is this very comfortable, but if they get ruined in the process you can just throw them away without any regrets.

Gloves for Heavy Lifting

Reorganizing the furniture in your living space is an incredibly simple way to change the appearance of your entire house. And the best part about it is that it’s practically free. You don’t need to invest in any extra materials to do this, which is great news if you want to rejuvenate your rooms on a budget.

Nonetheless, this project isn’t without its challenges. There will be a lot of heavy lifting involved, so get your strength up and ask someone to help you when you need it. On top of that, your hands will require an extra layer of protection, so a thick pair of gloves is ideal in this situation.

Glasses for Woodworking

3M Safety Glasses Solus 1000 Series ANSI Z87 Scotchgard Anti-Fog Clear Lens Low Profile Blue/Black Frame

You don’t have to be a master woodworker to build a few original pieces of furniture for your home and garden. However, you will need to hammer in some nails and install a few potential moving parts, depending on the complexity of our project. You can also go the super-easy way and simply glue together some stuff, but the harder the task is, the more fun you’ll have, trust us.

Building shelves and cabinets is a simple project which will help you organize your home better and declutter your living space. These come in handy anywhere: in the bathroom, in the bedroom, and even in the basement after you’ve successfully repurposed it.

But this is also the most dangerous task on the list, so you need to take extra precautions for yourself. The biggest risk you are faced with in this situation is being injured by a loose splinter. This is why you need to protect your eyes first and foremost. You don’t need to go all out and buy special goggles. A pair of old glasses will do nicely.

Conclusion

Remodeling and renovating your home with your own two hands is a very satisfying endeavor that gives your entire living space a brand-new look and feel. While DIY might seem complicated at first, there are various project options out there with different degrees of intensity. In addition, you can find the perfect one to suit your needs, your budget, and your available free time.

But if you take up this responsibility, make sure to equip yourself properly. Given the nature of these activities, you won’t need high-tech worker gear or anything. Just make sure that you are protected according to what you’re doing and the environmental and weather conditions you are doing it in.

How to Make a Glass Shelves at Home

Being better and trying for more beautiful things create a sense of life, motivation and in fact the sign of maturity. After one’s own looks the next thing is the style of living. Interior designing or home decoration is as much old as the human itself. In the discussion of home décor glass and mirror products never let themselves put behind.

From the last few decades, glass products have become more popular due to the unique quality of glass products. Who can beat glass when it came to creating more widely and fresh looks? Other than decorations glass is the best option for storage. Glass products used for storage include glass tables, glass cabinets, glass shelves, and many more.

How to Make a Glass Shelves at Home
How to Make Glass Shelves at Home

Do you remember any house without glass shelves? The answer is no. Because glass shelves are the most versatile products in order to add storage without creating an extra mess. If you are looking to add shelves to your home or office let me tell you some important points before you buy the actual shelf.

Glass shelves are widely used over wooden or any other material due to many reasons like they happily fit almost every décor style and show off the stored object in an unrestricted way.

Before you order your product ask some question to yourself first. What will be placed on the shelf? Do remember for heavy material book shelving should never be used. How often will you access the stuff placed on the shelf? Who is more likely to access the shelf? Are you going to place crockery or books regularly accessible? Who is going to use the stuff actually placed on the shelf?

Once you have answers to all these questions now consider some more points regarding the selecting of the best place for the shelf.

In a living room, glass shelves are used to display stuff. Place your favorite art piece on it and let it centralized the part of the room. To use glass shelves for the living room you must pay extra attention to the support for the shelf. If you are going to place heavy stuff on it use load-proof glass, like the tempered glass is necessary. It’s also necessary to place the shelf where it makes sense and does not disturb other furniture.

Bedrooms are the best option for glass shelves, place your favorite photographs on shelves, and can be used to display other beautiful objects. Make a shelf to place your most frequently used objects to ensure to take them with you every time.

Use glass shelves to complement your glassware in the kitchen. In this way, you can not only make your kitchen modern but also add an airy sense to it. It’s necessary to use toughened to support the weight of glassware and crockery.

In a smaller bathroom glass shelves and cabinets can increase the sense of space. This small effort can add style to your bathroom easily.

Glass shelves can also be used for hallways but make sure they properly fit the space and must not cause any unwanted conditions.

Once the place of the shelf is decided let’s make our own homemade glass shelf.

The things we will be using are:

  • A toughened glass also called tempered glass
  • Straightedges
  • Anchors
  • Drywall
  • Level
  • Screws
  • Cutting oil
  • Measuring tape
  • Brackets
  • Stud finder
  • Gloves
  • A cloth
  • Drill
  • Glass cutter
  • Tapper

Step 1: Plan The Shelf

Plan the shelf
Plan the shelf

We have almost planned our shelf earlier. After selecting the appropriate place for the shelf plan the type of glass we are going to use for the shelf for that particular place. As I mentioned above we are using tempered glass for our shelf. Now decide the shape of shelf, shapes of shelves available in the market are countless. You may end up choosing a rectangle glass shelf, oval, or floating glass shelf.

Step 2: Take the measurement

Take measurement
Take measurement

Throughout the whole process taking the exact measurements is most crucial. Take the measurements of the place to write down each and every point clearly. Use a measuring tape to mark exact positions where to exactly place the shelf. If you missed any point to measure you may end up with the worst design.

Step 3: Cut the glass for the shelf

Cut the glass for shelf
Cut the glass for the shelf

Now it’s time to cut the glass to make the self. If working with glass ever threatens you, you can order a custom-cut glass according to your measurements. But if you are ready to cut the glass by yourself make sure to follow the necessary instructions.

To start the process find a place large enough to place the glass. Now mark the glass according to the measurement we took earlier with the glass marker. Now place straightedges according to the measurements and cut the glass with a glass cutter. You may use duct tape to mark the positions of glass and then use a wall lubricated glass cuter to mark the edges. Then place the glass on a table and snap the part of glass you marked unnecessary.

Step 4: Install glass holder or shelf brackets

Install glass holder or shelf brackets
Install glass holder or shelf brackets

We are defiantly going to hang our shelf on a holder or specially design shelf brackets. These brackets are easily available at home improvement stores or glass specialized stores.

Different types of brackets are used to hang the shelves. Two common types are mentioned below.

  • Fixed Brackets- These are conventional brackets that support the shelves and allow a greater load to be placed on the shelf supported by them
  • Floating Brackets – These are brackets floating against the wall. In fact, they are attached to the wall supporting shelves directly. Many people think they are not safe to use but the fact is it just requires carefully selected fixing to work properly.

Fixing brackets to the wall may seem painful or unsecured but it can be made secure by paying little attention to the instruction. First of all, we need to select the proper type of nails to be used for the shelf then select anchors according to the structure of your wall. If your walls are drywall then metal anchors will be better than plastic anchors.

When drilling holes for the glass shelf some people do not consider of exact measurements necessary. Drilling holes without analysis and proper marking can make the process complex and painful. When marking the positions try covering the place with tape then mark the tape and drill holes.

In order to level the points marked by you for the holes, I will recommend using a laser level. If you don’t have the laser level borrow it and use it to eliminate the overhead of conventional levels.

And the final point is always triple-check the weight and installation instructions before started to work on the product.

Now come back to our point, we need to drill holes into the wall to fix the brackets. If you have drywall then use a stud finder to find the studs. After that drill pilot holes and place anchors. If they don’t best fit the holes use some hard material like hummer to push them inside. Once anchors are fixed into the wall screw the shelf brackets into it.

Step 5: Install the shelf

 Install the shelf
Install the shelf

When you are satisfied about brackets are securely fit into the holes place the glass we cut for our shelf. Triple check, did everything worked according to the plan? If yes, Wow, your beautiful glass shelf is ready to be decorated.
